How to Draw A Fish Step by Step

We have all drawn a fish at some point in our life, most probably when we were kids. Drawing a fish is easy, but drawing it in an artistic way can be a bit difficult. However, that need not be the case. Fish drawings should always be done in an easy manner, and if you do not know how to do it in an easy yet artistic way, you can follow my personal approach to drawing a fish.

To draw a fish, we start with the basic shape for the body. Then we add the tails and fins, and work on the eyes and scales. Finally, we use a bold pencil to redo the outline and give it a fine finish.

Start with the body

Draw an oval shaped body for the fish.

Next the tail

The tail is drawn in the shape of a hand fan.

Add the top fins

These fins are a bit spiky.

Bottom fins

The fins in the lower part of the body have a much smoother finish.

Add the details

Use a light pencil to draw the inner details of the fish.

Draw the scales next

Keep using the light pencil to sketch the fish’s scales.

Deepen the outlines

Use a dark pencil to darken the outline.

Next the eye

Give the fish a round eye.

Some more details

Draw a few lines on the tail.

Final touches

Almost done. Just sharpen the drawing a bit with a dark pencil.

Coloring time

Give the fish a nice golden yellow color.
