How to Draw A Dragonfly Step by Step

Despite being an ordinary insect, the dragonfly still has an appealing look to it, especially when you view it from the top. It’s symmetry is what attracts me the most, and it’s something that I use to draw this wonderful little insect. Drawing dragonflies is quite easy if you know the right approach. But if you don’t know how you can do so, you can take a look at the process I follow to draw a dragonfly.

To draw a dragonfly, we take a top to bottom approach, where we start with the head and finish on the body. We then add the wings, and keep it symmetrical. Finally, once we add the antennas, and draw the small designs on its wings, we’ll give it one last outline with a sharp pencil to finish the drawing.

Start with the body

Draw a small oval.

Add the head

Draw a circle on top of the body.

Add the tail next

The tail is drawn in the shape of a baseball bat.

Next the antennas

Two simple lines with circles on the end will do the trick here.

Add the wings

Draw a pair of wings, one on each side.

One more pair

Draw the other pair of wings.

Sharpen the outlines

Use a dark pencil to darken the outlines.

Do some designing

Add a bit of design to the wings.

Keep going

Continue with the designs on the wings.

Final touches

Use a dark pencil to add the last touches to the drawing.

Color it

Color your dragonfly with some nice light colors.
